And What Was the Right Hand Thinking?

Bureaucrat: Why are you calling today?

Me: I received a card from your office.

Bureaucrat: Who sent the card?

Me: Your office sent the card.

Bureaucrat: But who is on the card?

Me: The only name on the card is mine.

Bureaucrat: No one’s name is on the card?

Me: Just your agency.

Bureaucrat: What does it say?

Me: I read her the card.

Bureaucrat: What does it say for a blah blah blah number?

Me: It does not have a number.

Bureaucrat: There’s no number?

Me: It justs says update.

Bureaucrat: OK. What’s your name?

Me: Simple American

Bureaucrat: Give me your SSN.

Me: 123456789

Bureaucrat: Lets update the computer.

Me: (I give her the info she needs for an update.)

Bureaucrat: Have a good day and get luck on your job hunt.

What job hunt? A little innocuous card like this can be a little frightening as government has ways it can hammer you. So you call ‘em back and they don’t have a clue why you are calling. This is the second one of these I have received since being employed by the college last year. The return address is in my county, but the postmark is Austin. Do these people talk to each other?

Where’s the Queen of Hearts when you need her? Oh Alice! Little help down here.

Power to the People

Monday, September 26th, 2005

America is supposed to be about people. And as I look at America, all of the good things come from people, a few uncommon individuals. Government has never done anything good for anybody without taking from somebody to provide for somebody else. This is rarely done with any reasonable measure of efficiency. But American people, the individual, give to his brothers and sisters beyond what the government does because he knows it is right.

The individual is the inspiration for all that is good in this country. And when inspired individuals come together great things happen. That is our genesis when our founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. The great companies that made good products and inspired more people to go out and create more wealth and jobs helped the country grow and expand. The inspired individuals that made good governments at local, state and national level have made good governments that allow the individual to remain an individual.

The problem comes when an individual comes along without an inspiration. That’s when the great company or government turns utilitarian. It goes from a system of enlightenment to a bureaucracy. No bureaucracy ever made a country great from the beginning of the first council of uninspired fools to those that currently are in charge of America today.

Democrat or Republican, neither one seems to be able to get it right. The Democrats claim to want to help the poor, but what have they done, beyond providing a dry nipple to the poor. The poor keep crying and Democrats keep promising, but the poor cannot step away from poverty with a small handout. The Republicans go to bat for big business. They do not care that it is the small business that has the inspired individual. The small business hires the poor man and sometimes the poor man with a dream creates the small business. Freedom is not a job. Freedom is a dream.

Where are the dreamers today? They are not in government. They are not with those that have given up hope. No dreams reside with those that sell shares at one price to the public and a discount to the good ol boys. We need to find the dreamers.

Once these people can be identified, American must look with a critical eye and see who is holding us down. Who is turning to the right, because we have always turned to the right or the book says that is the way to turn. We need new rules. We need a better driver. It is time to turn away from the Democrats and the Republicans and find a group of Americans that love this country more than they love themselves. We need Americans that have a dream.

American once was the melting pot. But today people have tried to push us into bands of the rainbow. How does diversity make me better, when it forces me to declare I’m a white Anglo-Saxon American Protestant heterosexual? I think I’m okay just being an American. Everything else is just personal or a factor of my epidermis. Can we melt again people? That’s where toleration is. Toleration is in the fact that we are one people, despite the color of our skin, where my ancestors came from, how they arrived, what God I choose to bend my knee to or even if I turn my back to that consideration. And who’s in my bed, well that’s my bed so leave it alone. American is great when we leave each other alone, yet we come together when we need each other.

I don’t care for busy bodies, politicians, or bureaucrats. My heart belongs to the red, white, and blue in the flag of Texas and Old Glory. I want to be able to dream and I can and I will. Just don’t tread on my dream or the dreams of those I care for. If you do I will come back at you with the Constitution in hand and the desire to make this country new once more.

It is time for power to the people. No more bureaucrats that cannot mind a budget stealing from honest folks. We have to take a look at our dreams and take the power away from those who can only scheme. No more lies. No more contempt for flyover country.

Truth.

Honesty.

Benevolence.

Man’s greatness comes from the application of his volition. That is what makes us greater than the animals. We can act beyond mere instincts. Emotion does not have to lead our way. We can think and we can achieve. The people can be the power. The people can be America.

I can only pray and dream.

What Book Are You?

You’re The Mists of Avalon!

by Marion Zimmer Bradley

You’re obsessed with Camelot in all its forms, from Arthurian legend
to the Kennedy administration. Your favorite movie from childhood was "The Sword in
the Stone". But more than tales of wizardry and Cuban missiles, you’ve focused on
women. You know that they truly hold all the power. You always wished you could meet
Jackie Kennedy.

Take the Book Quiz
at the Blue Pyramid.

Have not read this, but I have intended too.

Home Again. I Like To Be Here When I Can.

Monday, September 26th, 2005

Well I am home again. And here is a recap of what occurred since the last post.

Saturday we played Ghost Recon 2 for some time. Then I figured I better get writing and pounded out some changes for Skinwalker. In the evening Jason and his gf came by. They brought Supernatural’s first two episodes over and we watched the first one. WOW! This show is on my do not miss list. This TV show is what 12 to Midnight writes about, in fact it fits nicely with the format we use on the Modern Dispatch ezine. Great show. You must watch this if you are a horror fan. You won’t be disappointed.

Called it night and woke and worked on Skinwalker a bit more. We watched the second episode of Supernatural and it rocked. I’m not going to give any detail. You have to watch so you can enjoy the show. I will say the story is about two brothers that seek the paranormal and are trying to find their father, who is also a paranormal researcher. After the show, Ed showed up and we had a quick meeting of 12 to Midnight. We are seeking ways to speed up production. We are all so busy now and we want to be more efficient, as we have a lot of freelance work waiting in the queue.

Then we started getting things ready to play Serenity. This is a roleplaying game. Everybody made a character. Ed, Preston and my kids were playing of course. Then Jason and Corey joined us as well. Preston made a pilot/captain character, while my daughter made a sweet mechanic. Corey created a streetwise kid that talked all the time but seemed to know a lot of folks and how to do things. Everybody else was a mercenary. Ed’s was the most dangerous, as he was an Alliance assassin during the war, who had been kicked out for a reason not revealed.

We started the adventure on the planet Persiphone. The captain and his mechanic were interviewing for crew and looking for work. They hired all of the other characters and then the captain was contacted by Baron (or is it Lord) Oxley. He was looking to hire some mercenaries to take care of some thugs on Ha-Tim’s moon out on the rim. With a destination in mind the call went out for cargo to go to Ha-Tim’s moon. Turns out this bloke name Badger has some cargo that needed moving. Badger has a bit of rep, so the captain is not sure if he wants to move these items. The mechanic sez she needs a converter coil for the engine. The captain negotiates to get the converter coil up front and 750 platinum upon delivery of the goods. The deal is made. The mechanic installs the converter coil and the ship loads the cargo and leaves Persiphone.

The Captain is curious about the cargo from Badger. Ed’s character has some skills and combined with then mechanic’s engineering abilities the are able to insert a camera into the crate and identify the goods. The cases are full of laser rifles, the latest Alliance technology. Now they are worried that the rifles are going to the people they are being paid to remove. They feel a need to deliver the cargo as that’s just good business practices, but they don’t want to face the latest tech when it is time to fight the gang. They would not mind owning one of these rifles either. So they open the crates and look them over. Ed has made two doses of contact poison and placed them on a pair of the weapons. He does not tell his companions.

As soon as they land on Ha-Tim’s moon the Sheriff arrives. The characters are wary regarding his presence. Turns out that he knows Oxley has sent him and deputizes them. He also warns of a shipment of illegal laser rifle and to keep an eye out for them. Now the crew knows they are working both sides of the fence.  They decide they want to open the crates and drain the rifles power cells. They are doing this when the gang stops by asking why the hold up. They are to meet at a tavern to make the exchange at day break.

They go early. Brandon’s character looks over the area and finds a sniper in position. He kills the sniper and claims the weapon. The rest of the crew is moving the cargo to the tavern, when they are met on the road by a dozen thugs. One has the cash to complete the deal, but the captain does not like the way they showed up before the tavern. He has the sniper kill the leader. Then Ed who remained on the ship has bound the mechanic. He decides to fly over and intimidate the thugs with threats of bombing them. He rolls really good and all of them flee. They wound the leader and then have him call the big bad boss.

They get in touch with the boss and learn that he will meet them at noon. Ed triangulates the radio signal to find the gang’s location. He flies there, while the mechanic escapes her binding. At the cave, Ed joins the bad guys. He would never do this in a long campaign, but this is a one time play thing. So the bad guy heads off to the tavern. The mechanic flees in one of the Firefly’s shuttle craft. She meets up with the Captain and gives him the scoop.

The captain decides to attack the gang’s hideaway, while the others are gone. Ed is waiting for them. They rush in and two of the crew are badly wounded, forcing them to retreat. The mechanic checks the ship to ensure it can fly away. They take off, but not before doing a full burn in the cave entrance, frying all of the occupants. The crew escapes with some coin, laser rifles and few new enemies. Everybody had a blast.

Another high point of the evening was cooking the Cornish Game Hens I carried with me from Sugar Land. I had six and Preston has two ovens in his house. Excellent. I mixed some pepper, rosemary and basil together and rubbed it into the hen’s skin. Then I cooked it hour two hours. Kim made some potatoes and green beans and it was good eating for everybody.

The rest of the evening was spent in cleaning up a bit and getting some things packed. In the morning I packed the van, got the kids to eat and we left Bryan. We had printed some maps the night before. Big mistake on the way here was not knowing the alternate routes. Not going to make that mistake again. Hit highway 6 going south and there was negligible traffic. So I followed that rode and it was good all the way to 290. Highway 290 was also moving well and I kept on going. Next thing I knew we were in Sugar Land and not even two hours had past. We went to Wings and Things for lunch, as our breakfast was pretty light.

Then we went home. As I turned the corner I was pleased to see the house was still standing. I parked the car and walked the property. Roof looks fine. All I had was one of my hollies is leaning over at a 60 degree angle now and a crepes myrtle is totally over on its side. No problem there. Will get those trees staked up straight in no time.

Its so good to be home. Home where my pillow is. Home where I can use my internet fully and contact my wife. Home where I can finally see that Craig, my Lufkin partner is still alive and doing well. His house lost shingles and some siding, but other than that all is well with him. So glad he is well though.

Once again I want to thank all of my blog visitors. You have all been so kind and I think your love supported me through this and actually provided the will and power that pushed the storm aside from me and my friends and family. God bless you all.

The Storm Missed Us

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

Bryan, Texas has not recieved a drop of rain. We have lazed around today. Played some Ghost Recon 2, shot some basketball, and spent some time on Skinwalker rewrites.

I just learned that the kids do not have to go to school until Wednesday. The college where I work opens its doors on Monday according to the web site. The Sugar Land website informs me that according to the plan devised by the Office of Homeland Security I should drive back on Monday. Guess I will miss another day of work. Oh well. Almost of a mind to drive back today, but there are curfews in some place and I don’t feel like messing with that.

Until then I will write some more and play some Serenity RPG. Guess I can look forward to next weekend and going to see Serenity at the movies.

Want to thank everyone that thought about my family. Your encouragement and prayers did help. Look forward to returning to normal life very soon.

Before the Storm V

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

We’ve been playing a lot of Ghost Recon and Halo during the afternoon. My family joined Preston’s as they walked the dogs. It was a relaxing way to get a last look at the outside before the storm hits us. Still could see blue skies. The wind is starting to blow. Good kite flying wind. Like you get at the beach. Folks have got thier homes ready pretty much. Saw one family playing catch in the yard. Another group of kids were trying to free some toy lodged up high in a tree.

We got back to the house and I took some pictures of the sky and the van that carried me through so much. I’ve had this car over 10 years and she performed well yesterday. I suspect she will get me home when the time comes.

Well we played more X-Box. But I had to pause for the beautiful sunset we saw. It was red red red. No orange in this glow. It was too intense. I hope I can upload these pictures to share with you.

After that we played some zombies. It was fun and my son won so he is happy. ITs 1:30am now and I prepare to go to bed. The wind has gotten stronger. It really sings through the higher branches of the trees, No rain yet, but it should be starting up any time now.

Before the Storm IV

Had the best sleep ever. Was trying to respond to people last night, but I kept nodding off. Today ate some breakfast and then caught up on some blogging.

After that we went and picked up burritos at Freebirds. They were awesome. Then I went and bought gas. The lines were not too bad and I want to be able to move if things escalate here. Plus I will go home some day I’m sure. While sitting in the gas line I heard the post office is suspending service today and tomorrow up here. I brought all my bills with me to mail. So much for that strategy. Sorry DU I have your check also.

Then I went to Albertsons and they had things I had not seen in Houston. Water and ice. No milk could be found. I grabbed 4 cases of water, ice and some sodas. Gamers have to have their sodas. While in the que I chatted with a man that left Kingwood. He commented how a lot of the people fleeing are just running without any plan or idea of what they intend to do or where to go. That does not surprise me. Makes me count my blessing for having good frineds.

On the drive back to Preston’s I heard that the bad side of the storm will hit east of I-45. I’m west of there and we are still going to get hit with tropical storm winds. Thats good to hear. Kind of morbid when you are happy to catch a tropical storm, but one must consider the alternative. We still have to worry about tornadoes. Really my biggest worry is having a storm hit and just sit on us and we become oversaturated with water. I remember a storm doing that to us in the 90s. But I have seen a storm bounce of the coast like a top, so I’m still not going to call us safe from the worst of it.

We did a little yard work at Preston’s. We moved all of the stuff that the wind could blow and put it up. Think everything is secure. Going to get another controller for the X-Box and we are going to start the monster gameathon. some other folks will drop by when they get off of work to join in the festivities. Will peek here on occasion to give you all updates.

Also would like to welcome bossy little sis to my blog. Most of you have seen her, as she is Mrs SA. Glad she is safe and sound in Toronto.

Before the Storm III

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

I stayed up all night packing and loading the van for the evacuation. My daughter stayed up with me and she was a great a help. AT four o’clock I decided to take a shower. I’d rather start off clean at least.

I have never done this before. Run from a hurricane. When I was youger I would tease folks that ran for safer climes. Now that I have kids the old attitude is not acceptable or to be considered.

Walking through the house one last time is very melancholy. I’m wondering if I will be able to do this again.

I come out of the shower and it is 4:45. My daughter is dozing and I wake her up. I want to leave now. She starts packing the food. I go upstairs and upon the third attemp my son realizes I am reall. The journey starts at 5;15 with Green Day playing. Listen to the entire album twice. I travelled a total of three miles. And that was how I started my day.

When we left home I told the kids we would go to IHOP (International House of Pancakes) when we get to Bryan. I thought my trip might take three hours to complete. It would take me twelve hours and fifteen minutes to arrive in Brenham, TX. A journey of 70 miles. It usally takes me an hour. I averaged less than 5 miles an hour until I left Bellville.

During this time I would see displays of unfair treatment. A small town’s police department made certain their residents had priority where two streams of traffic merged. I though I would never get beyond that intersection. My son had to learn how to pee in a cup, since he refused to go on the side of the road. My daughter and I held our water all the way to Brenham.

The traffic was so thick I dare not exit the highway and get food as I might not be allowed to get back on the road. Fortunately, we packed plenty of food and water. Never had to stop.

In Belleville the driver behind me hit my van with her SUV. It woke my kids up. My daughter asked me what did I do. I gathered my wits and informed her that it was not me. So I got out of the Quest and looked at the rear bumber. Could not really see a scratch on the van. None on her SUV either. I was miffed, but I was fortunate to have not hit anyone myself. I let her off, as I saw no damages. Everyone was under enough stress already. I was so tired I kept nodding. Once I was within inches of the truck I followed. My daughter yelled at me and the other driver pulled up, thus avoiding a collision.

I saw at least a half a dozen emergency vehicles respond to accidents and I suspect stress related condtions, perhaps heart attacks during the day.

We arrived in Sealy at 1:00 and we thought about eating at the Whataburger there, but there was no apparent parking, so I kep on going. The restaurants on the other side of I-10 were closed. Sealy gets my compliments too. They really moved us quickly threw there town and I actually exceeded 30 mph for two miles. Problem was the police did not help the county which was no where to be seen. The 18 mile drive to Bellville would not be completed until 5:00.

The way the trip up to Bellville went scared me a bit. I worried that I would run out of gas. There was known on the road I travelled. Fortunately, I topped off in the morning when I left.

As I left Bellville it felt like the parting of the Red Sea. All the traffic went left and I went straight. For the next 18 miles I travelled at highway speeds. Very refreshing in deed. Went to Whataburger and it was closed. Too make things interesting my son kicked over his cup of pee. You can guess who had to clean up the mess. Fortunately it was not that bad. Burger King was nearby but also closed. McDonald’s is on the other side of the freeway. I need to go to the loo, BAD. So does my girl. We went to Wal-Mart and powdered our nose. They also had a Subway sandwhich and we ate there.

The walk and meal made me tired. I looked at my phone and I saw I missed 13 calls. Damn! I called Preston and he gave me some roads to take that should get me to Bryan. So I kept driving north until I it HW 105 and then FM 50 and finally HW 60 all the way to Bryan. Was a relief to arrive at Preston’s home. I am totally in his debt. The time of my journey’s end is 8:30. I am there just when I thought plus 12 hours.

Before the Storm II

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

Picking up my kids was unreal. It might take 45 minutes on a bad day for the round trip. Today I left home at 3:15 and did not get home until 6. The drive home was along an evacuation route. I do admit I stopped to pick up some cash at an ATM and fish food for my poor fishes.

Told the kids the bad news as soon as they got in the car. We have to eat all the ice cream before we leave. They were crushed of course. But I have decided to go to Bryan and stay with Preston. So it could be a major game-a-thon in the making. I still have my work cut out for Skinwalker though. So much to do still. But Preston pointed out something that I think will be brilliant. Cannot say more as I don’t want to spoil it for potential players.

When I got home I took pictures of my house from as many different angles as I could. These will serve as reminders of what it looked like should it get leveled. Also can show the insurance folks as well. Then I cooked supper, ate too much ice cream and paid my bills. Also washed the kids’ uniforms so they will be ready when we come home. Talked to my sis-in-law. She has to stay and work during the hurricane. Her hospital is requiring her to work. I told her to stay at the hospital no matter what. Don’t bother going home. Too dangerous. Did all this while watching Lost and Invasion. Invasion looks really cool. And I love Lost. Got pretty strange tonight.

I’m pretty much packed. I told the kids to bring 5 days worth of clothes and whatever the did not want to lose. I’m bringing the laptop and I hope to post on occasion. Also lugging insurance papers, passports, my wife’s jewelry and lots of games. Got the X-box, the playstation and my dice. Also taking some books for the game marathon that will incur. There will be a couple moving in from Houston and the guy plays and there are some other gamers in Bryan. Gaming will help keep our minds off the potential loss of the house.

The weather map looks pretty intimidating tonight. Still going to have to face 75+ mph winds. Though it will be over 100+ mph as projected for my home’s location. The worse thing today is my neck is really stiff and sore. Has to be the stress and lack of sleep. Well I better get packing. I want to get gas tonight and leave early in the morning.

I’ll remember you all in my prayers. Thanks to Caracola, Jane, and Misti for posting well wishes on my IM. You girls always make my day. Hugs to you all.
