It Was Just a Year Ago

Me and the kids will never forget Hurricane Rita. The big one that missed us. But for a few days it closed schools and jobs. Made us abandon our home and flee away from the coast. For a few days we imposed upon Flametoad’s home. We will always be thankful to him and Mrs. Flametoad for taking us in. Also thankful that my missus could make the drive from Detroit to Toronto for the weekend, since flying home would have not been possible.

For the sake of memory I have been reading those posts from last year. Here are the posts that came from that time. Before the Storm I, Before the Storm II, Before the Storm III, Before the Storm IV, Before the Storm V, The Storm Missed Us and Home Again. I Like to Be Here When I Can. Give them a read if you have the time.

Amazing how much has happened since then. I reread those comments and most of those bloggers still visit me today. A couple have disappeared and I wish them well. Some don’t post as often as back then but that is how life goes. Wonder what will happen over the next year? No more hurricanes though. Just too much to deal with.

Hurricanes are nasty.. but so are tsunamis, and wars, and diseases.. Let’s hope we don’t get as much again this time.. but more Gelato, and Lormaikai!

  2. simple american Says:

I agree LB. Want peace and calm weather. Yes to Gelato, Lormaikai, and Tiramisu too!!! Blue Ribbon for you sir. I guess you are getting back into your routine. :)

  3. Dirty Unicorn Says:

Wow looking back through those posts it’s hard to imagine it has been a year already. Seems like yesterday. Time truely does fly.

Thank the Lord that this year has been gentle to us in the south. No horrible Ritas, Katrinas or other mean tempered wind-ladies to threaten our shores ;)

I love tropical skies, I hate tropical weather.

Dirty Unicorn (proving he’s still “out there” even if he dun talk much anymore!?! :P )

  4. simple american Says:

Good to see ya here DU. It has been a while. Reread all your comments from last year too. :)

Was not that fun then, but it is good memory now.  Red Ribbon for you too sir.

  5. Chen Says:

Hurricanes are horrible. Yeah, indeed time flies.. now is toward the end of September already..

  6. Pink Cotton Says:

    *touch wood*

but coming from malaysia, the land where natural disasters are rare…i was pretty excited and curious of how it would be like if a hurriacne hit us *double touch wood*

kekeek..but u really cant blame me..i grew up watching movies like twister..LOL

  7. Kenny Ng Says:

I saw hurricanes before but not as big as happened in America, I was really scared when I saw the hurricanes pulled off a tree. Yeah… time really flies.

  8. ah nel Says:

Time does not wait for us…now its year end ledi…

  9. ah Pek Says:

yaa… sometimes i feel i am living in a blessed land. we don’t have hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes. Only a small tsunami and the occasional floods.

  10. angel Says:

Time & tide waits for no man…

    *makes the V-sign*
    World peace…
    *scratches head*
Sounds outta place a lil’ bit, huh?

  11. JoeC Says:

It is amazing how year after year that ppl endure these disasters by moving away from their homes for a period of time…. I cant imagine it, so disruptive, we are truely blessed in m’sia that we dont live on the edge and at the mercy of mother nature…. I salute you and may the good Lord keep you and your family safe always. Cheers!

  12. Angeleyes Says:

those natural disasters are really scary… feel blessed that we don’t have it here…not those really disruptive types… even the occasional floods are enough to create havoc here.

  13. zara's mama Says:

Wow.. LB’s comment is first grade!!

There’s just so many natural disasters and man made disasters today… But lets hope for what LB say. :P

*going downstairs to check if I have any icecream in my freezer*

  14. simple american Says:

So far no storms have threatened us Chen. But it can still come this late in the year in the Gulf coast.

So never been close to one PC. I’ve ridden out some light storms. The flooding can be pretty bad. Even when the storm skirts you if you are on the wet side. For Rita we were on the dry side. Did not see a drop of rain. Chey.

Those winds can really snatch anything Kenny. Even though we missed the worst of Rita, I still lost one of my holly trees. :(

I don’t know about you Ah Nel, but I’m ready for some holidays. :)

Here it can get bad even without the hurricanes Ah Pek. Monday we had flooding, which is always a threat this time of year and in the Spring. We can have tornadoes at any time of year too. At least we don’t earthquakes. Got to count that blessing.

Thats okay Angel. Hug! Your still liuliu from your trip I bet. Glad you’re back safe and sound.

Thanks JoeC. That is the first time I ever evacuated for anything. And if not for my kids I would of just stayed home and blogged until I lost power. hehe

Flooding can be scary Angeleyes. Two years ago I blew an engine in my truck trying to go through deep water that used to be a street. Thought I was buller proof in that truck. I was wrong. :(

haha I hope you find ice cream ZM. You deserve it.

  15. velverse Says:

yes, a lot have change since then, be glad there isn’t such nasty thing happening and wish that it never would repeat itself again.

People come people go, that’s how the world works. SO yeah, we can only wish them well in anything they do :)

  16. titoki Says:

Glad to know that you and your missus have survived such ordeal. :)

  17. ah nel Says:

    oiii…where you going for holiday???come Malaysia lar… ;)

  18. ah nel Says:

u bring ur surfboard and extra 1 for me so when tsunami came we go surfing…guarantee better than goldcost ;P

  19. simple american Says:

Thats a good prayer to make V. Me I like the folks I get to know. Very possessive. keke But really I know people come and go. Just say goodbye when you wanna leave and not disappear. Less head scratching and hair loss then.

Should had a great time. Dim sum in Toronto and spending time with her parents. Course if you read you can see me and the kids fared well too.

I will go to Malaysia someday Ah Nel. Hopefully in the next 5 years. Me surfing. That would be a comedy. Maybe I should bring my ice skates. I know you have some good rinks there.

  20. laymank Says:

hmm.. this reminds me that i have only known you for almost a year, right after the hurricane.

    how? I can’t remember…

    :)

  21. misti Says:

brought back memories indeed. one of those moments where we got closer eh? *blush*

  22. pinkie Says:

to peace and calm weather… cheers!

  23. Abaniko Says:

At least it’s good news that nobody was badly hurt in your family when Hurricane Rita came to your place. Here’s hoping it will be the last natural disaster that will affect you and your loved ones.

  24. ah nel Says:

    wuahh…next 5 yrs duno i stil alive or not…LOL

    yeah…come we go ice skating… :)

  25. suituapui Says:

I suppose such disasters - natural or caused by man - can turn people back to God, brush the dust off their Bible and start reading, look for their rosaries and pray…!!

  26. J Says:

move to malaysia!! away from all those nasty disasters!! would that be a plausible option? :D

  27. simple american Says:

I cannot remember either laymank. But I’m glad you dropped by.

That little hurricane really tied some knots misti.

Hear hear Pinkie. A toast to good weather.

I sure hope so Abaniko. Thanks.

If I can last 5 years Ah Nel I know you can. hehe

Yep Suituaoui. Disasters remind us that God does not forget us.

It could be JJ. Something I am considering quite honestly.

  28. misti Says:

so, it’s the weekend, and you have a life.

  29. simple american Says:

It’s the weekend and I’m overwhelmed with projects. hehe! Will I ever finish anything?

  30. misti Says:

well, at any rate, you’re gonna complete way more than me. me? i’m yesterday’s procrastinator.

  31. kimananda Says:

Here’s a toast, to no deadly hurricanes or other acts of nature which are not very nice, at least not for the forseeable future. :-)

  32. simple american Says:

I’ll wait and see misti. ;)

    I’m with ya Kimananda. Toast!

  33. z Says:

yes that was bad memories for me .but lets hope nothing like that again
    Wish you well

  34. Winn Says:

    i m glad it’s all over now.

appreciate life. i m sure after that incident it makes u and ur family stronger and closer…:)

  35. misti Says:

WinnKaur, it made us bloggers closer too. there was a few bloggers then, in the hurricane’s way that we were all collectively worried for, as some chose to stay home and ride out the storm.
i remembered rushing to type SA during those moments and worrying for him and his family when the jam on the road got ridiculous. there was a blogger who turned back, i think 3 times, because of the jam, and stayed home, stacking his furniture in a safe manner and protecting himself with mattresses, etc. thankfully, the storm didn’t get to any of the bloggers we knew/met during that episode.
so, there is real camaderie amongst blogmates! rah rah!

  36. lucia Says:

yes thank god in malaysia we do not have these natural disasters but then we have natural clowns in parliament. (sorry. couldn’t resist!)

one natural disaster malaysia experienced is flash flood. everytime heavy rain for just an hour or so, flood everywhere. oh… but the cause is not really natural but due to human’s treatment of nature!

  37. kat Says:

I agree with Lucia. Malaysia is so lucky in that we never experience no natural disasters. And yet, because of man’s greed and apathy, we get floods and landslides. Talk about taking things for granted!!

Yes, faster come to Bolehland!! Everyday will be like Christmas..lots of good food and company!! :D And make sure you travel light, because you’ll be carrying excess weight in your belly when you go home!!

  38. kat Says:

Eh..what am I saying!! We never experience natural disasters!!!

  39. simple american Says:

Same to you Z. So far this year we have seen well behaved weather.

It does Winn. Winn? WINN!!!!!!!!!!! Where is your blog?

Yep misti. All of you bloggers brought me no small measure of comfort. :)

We get those floods here too Lucia. I really should buy a boat for the backyard.

Gosh Kat. I look at all of the places I must visit. May need a year to do it all. keke

Why are the floods man’s fault. Because of the building? We have some of those problems here in Houston.

  40. Winn Says:

SA my blog decided to die on me…….i dunno why. perhaps the template is corrupted..

Do i realli look like someone u dated b4 back in 1986 when i was only 7 yrs old? hahaa…..
i have a common face la. i always hear ppl saying that i look like their so-and-so…their first gf, niece, aunt, friends etc:0) hahah….

  41. simple american Says:

You just resemble this girl I dated in College Winn. I know you are not her. You are much more alive than she. Chung was rather dry and reserved, which is why she and I only dated a couple of times and then stopped seeing each other. She came from Penang I think.

Perhaps you might be easy to mistake for someone else. But your wit is keen and all your own. :)

So you gonna start another blog or just be a commenter only? Don’t be a stranger and keep me informed on the adventures of Liucas.

  42. J Says:

oooh yes so move here then!! you’ve got to check on the job prospects too! but i figured even if u were to move here, it’ll be when ur kids finish with school! but it’ll be really exciting.. then you’d have more blog material.. ‘life of a Simple American in Malaysia’ hahahaahah!!!

@Winn: oi what happened la!how can it just decide to die on you?!

  43. simple american Says:

One of these days J I may just do that. Hope to write to earn my bread some day. Then I can live about anywhere ya know? And the blog meets would be a blast. Not to mention scattering the stuff off of tables at stabak.

  51. may Says:

thank goodness no tsunami or hurricane whilst I was on holiday… I don’t think I quite fancy being swept away by great waves and nasty winds!

I’m glad Mr. and Mrs. Flametoad gave you shelter too. Bless them.

  52. simple american Says:
