Day Four Skagway
We docked early in the morning at Skagway, Alaska. I was going on a train ride to White Pass. This required that I get moving quick. The missus and the young uns were going kayaking a little later. I headed down to the International Dining Room for breakfast. Joined #3 and his wife who were also riding on the train. Breakfast was real nice. I had a fruit bowl as well as an order of two over easy eggs with sirloin strip. They added some mushrooms which were just divine.

So after two days on the water I stepped off the Sapphire Princess. The train tracks were right by the docks and then a fellow came by with a golf cart and geve the three of us a ride to our train. It was one of four trains to make the trip to the top of White Pass. There were three other cruise ships in port and each had their own train reserved I assume.

You may be wondering what is a Skagway? I have no clue what it translates to in English. But I know there is a town and a river. The water seen below looks pretty rough. And yes it is. You won’t see any boats or rafts in this water as it is a Class 6 rapid. A little too much even for an extreme person.
The train would take us 20 miles from Skagway to Whitepass and briefly into Canada’s Yukon Territory. It was beautiful ride. Have a few nice shots. Would have had more if somebody named me had charged the battery. Dang!
I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

After the train ride I went and charged my camera. Then it was off to the International Dining Room for lunch. I had rabbit for the first time in my life. Very nice. And the presentation was so cute too. They sliced the rabbit and all the garnishes so they looked like a bunny. And of course no pic as the camera is charging.
After lunch the three of us went to Skagway. I was searching for charm from this one jewelry store for my daughter. I also wanted to check out the Phillip Stein watches I had learned of during a shopping lecture on board. That’s right. They even had lectures to help you with shopping. Like these people need help. haha

Skagway was an interesting place. The population triples during tourist season. Folks migrate there to work and they live in mobile homes, trailers, boats and tents. There is not enough permanent structures to accomodate them all. Not a lot of trendy food either. I did not eat there, as I had a ship full of free food to rely on. Save my money for tourist trinkets. Ha!

I found the stick building to be really interesting. It had a creepy Pinebox feel to it. If something evil did not reside in there, it should. muahahaha

Hey, I need to go there. Even if only for the fruit bowl. Nah, actually, I need to go just because I’m the only member of my family who hasn’t been. But honestly, I’d be there just for the fruit.

Hiya Angel. You like? Blue Ribbon for ya!
It is like a rollercoaster with all of that blur in some of those shots LB. I took some nice shots earlier, but they had glass reflection. Dang. So I rode on the outside of the car all of the way down until my battery died. Red Ribbon for you.
Hey Angel! Who ya pokin’ there?
hehe Sleep well.
Hey Cocka. Santa deserves a vacation too. White Ribbon for you sir.
Thanks for the compliment Chen.
So am I cool May? Huh? Huh? wakakakaka Glad you liked the pics.
No hunters in my family so I missed out on a lot of the game foods. Still have not tried squirrel either.
Misti, uh. Who ain’t sleepin’?
It looked bizarre. Then you saw the side and saw it is just a facade. Bummer. I was expecting a witch at the least inside.
And that fruit bowl would have been worth the trip Kimananda. I cannot get over how awesome cruise food was.
You need to go Lyn. You would have such a good time.

Rabbit tasted good. Very delicate flavor Bkworm.
It sure is Wuching. At least it can be reached by road.

October 12th, 2006 at 10:01 am
They like to create that facade for the tourists Kenny. The alleys and back streets looked like any other American town.
Aw Pinkie. If it wasn’t me it would of been a wolf or a bear or an eagle or an…
October 12th, 2006 at 10:19 am
Sirloin for breakfast? Wicked! They do feed you well, don’t they?
You do look adorable..I can just imagine all the little plinks clinging on to you..I’d like to cling on you too!
Aww…what a pity you didn’t get a picture of the rabbit. Would’ve been nice to see the garnishes..
October 12th, 2006 at 12:19 pm

October 12th, 2006 at 12:37 pm

Those scenary were cool… like a town I passed by at the border of Germany & Switzerland.
October 12th, 2006 at 2:21 pm
unlike Kimananda, I was horrified by the picture of cantaloupe. That stuff is gross! now the berries were kind of tempting but of course they had been contaminated by cantaloupe juice. yuck!
You look so happy in front of that ship. But weren’t you cold wearing shorts? My parents loved the train trip when they visited Alaska. I think it was their favorite part besides glacier bay.
October 12th, 2006 at 3:08 pm
It was beautiful there Angeleyes. And the rabbit was delish.
Heck Daphnewood, I was wearing shorts at Glaciar Bay too. Cold don’t bother me that much with all of the insulation I’m packing. I love cantoloupe and berries. But my son is with you on that. hehe
You should do this if you get a chance. They had a great program for the kids.
October 12th, 2006 at 5:38 pm
Very beautiful scenery! Thanks for capturing them!
October 12th, 2006 at 8:20 pm
ask for delivery…LOL
October 12th, 2006 at 8:35 pm
This place reminds me of New Zealand.
October 12th, 2006 at 9:04 pm
Thanks Christine. You should go check it out.
McDs don’t deliver Ah Nel. Plus they have to go through customs. Food will get cold. haha
It’s very rugged country. Beautiful in the summer. I don’t wanna think about it in the winter Titoki.
October 12th, 2006 at 11:17 pm
you had rabbit for makan? how can????
dang now you got me wanting to go to skagway too..
October 13th, 2006 at 8:46 am
It’s really nice too FF. You should check it out.
October 13th, 2006 at 5:31 pm
Actually SA, Mr. Daphnewood is seriously considering Alaska when he finishes his residency. He wants to be able to bring his services where they are really needed. Did you know that Alaska doesn’t even really have neurosurgery? Most (if not all) emergent cases are life-flighted to Seattle. He learned trauma at Hermann (best dang trauma hospital in the world in my eyes) so his true love is trauma neurosurgery. But I think we should at least visit the place before packing everything up and moving there. A cruise would be a nice start
October 14th, 2006 at 10:05 am
Skagway does sound interesting. I wonder what is so attractive about the tourist season that makes tourists and many others so keen to visit Skagway.
October 14th, 2006 at 11:41 pm
I think I cruise would be a lovely way to go about it Daphnewood. Does not surprise me that they have to go so far for medical services. One thing I learned there is when you buy a house. Make sure you have plumbing and all the little things we take for granted in the lower 48.
The cruise ships bring in a lot of folks everyday PY. Plus it is a port and it can be driven to. But it is really beautiful too. My wife and kids could see salmon and eagles when they were kayaking. It’s a great place for outdoor adventure.
October 15th, 2006 at 12:48 am

October 16th, 2006 at 3:37 am
Hahaha, cool pics. I don’t mean to brag, I don’t mean to boast, but you must be the Texan that rocks the most.
October 16th, 2006 at 9:36 am
Hi Astrosurge and welcome to my blog. I think Skagway has a lot going for it if you like doing outdoors things. Anchorage seems to be a hub to get anyhwhere else in Alaska. They have the largest seaplane airport in the US. So you can get to where you want for the Alaskan experience for you. Saw no weapons in Alaska.
Fair enough. Will do the meme as soon as time allows Misti.
I rock because I’m so fat the earth shakes when I walk K-Man. haha
October 16th, 2006 at 10:00 am
don’t worry. take as long as liu need. i sat on mine, till the others completed their’s. lol. at least i didn’t kill the meme. (i value my life) those veteran chuppers/choppers, better not ‘play play’ with them!
October 16th, 2006 at 11:30 am

The food pics explain a little about one of velverse’s comments: “I should thank Simple American by tempting him with more food pics then”. I had mentioned that I found velverse’s blog via yours.
October 17th, 2006 at 5:52 am
OK. Thanks Shoshana.

Oh well, KL is like that now too.. but it’s covered in Haze.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:31 pm
