Music in 1976 Tag
SiwwyPig from Down Under has tagged me. And this looks like a really fun meme too. So how can I not do it. First let us look at the rules:
- Go to PopCulture site.
- Pick the year you turn 18 years old. You’ll see the years on the left sidebar.
- Get yourself nostalgic over the songs from that year.
- Write something about how those songs affected you.
- Pass it on to five more friends.
And I agree with SiwwyPig. This meme is just an excuse to figure out how old people are.
Oh my gosh. What a great site!!! So many memories. This post may get totally out of hand. But in a good way.
Who cannot remember Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry? How many toes did I crush dancing to that tune? And I remember doing the Bump to KC and the Sunshine Band’s Shake Your Booty. Even my mom got bashed by my hips on this tune at the Lamar Band Banquet. But I had to Get Up Offa That Thing because the Godfather of Soul, James Brown commanded it.
When I joined the army that year I discovered Kiss and their live version of Rock and Roll All Night. Honestly I hated it because it would be played on the jukebox over and over. Why couldn’t they play some Steve Miller Band. He had some great tunes out like Take the Money and Run and Rock N Me.
I traveled a lot in the Army. So it was only appropriate that Chicago put out If You Leave Me Now. Cause I left everyone and everything. But Peter Frampton did not mind as he produced, Baby I Love Your Way and Show Me the Way. So I knew I did the right thing.
Aerosmith was young back then and they performed Dream On and I followed their example. I wrote lots of letters to my friends. And Queen reminded me of them with Your My Best Friend. And Donna Summer confirmed this with Love To Love You Baby. She was so sexy too.
There were a lot of hot tunes to help me forget about my drill sergeants. Earth, Wind, and Fire came out with Sing a Song. The Miracles had the Love Machine which most soldiers tried to convince the girls in town that they were. They would emphasize this with Rod Stewart’s Tonight’s the Night. Some were successful, others not so. Me I just wanted to get drunk, as I was still a confirmed virgin saving my self for the future wife. Three years in Germany would ruin that mind set.
At the time I feared becoming lost in Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody if I acted ungentlemanly. Plus I knew Love Hurts as Nazareth said so in their tune and I believed ‘em. Or worse I would be forced to listen to Gordon Lightfoot sing the entire Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
But I had plenty of dreams as Heart foretold in Magic Man and Electric Light Orchestra emphasized with Strange Magic. I just needed to start Taking It To the Streets with the Doobie Brothers. Why? Because Thin Lizzie said The Boys Were Back in Town. And we took our time to get there. It was a Slow Ride with Foghat that brought us along. Once we arrived the Tubes reminded us, Don’t Touch Me There. That’s when Foghat would come by once again with Fool For the City. Because I sure did miss home and a girl named Tracey and later that year a girl named Vinia. Often I would think of one of them when Kiss sang about a girl named Beth. But Nazareth said it best when they sang Love Hurts.
But Paul Anka had it right, as 18 was the Times of Your Life. The Rolling Stones supported this concept with Hot Stuff. And if you disagreed I would gain power from Jethro Tull’s Locomotive Breath to knock ya down. And all anyone could say when all was done was Mama Mia by Abba. And truly these were David Bowie’s Golden Years, hum bop bop.
But as I look back on 1976, there is a song that puts everything in perspective. And that tune was crooned by Paul Simon, Still Crazy After All These Years. Of course these days I must not forget Blue Oyster Cult either, and (Don’t Fear) the Ripper.
I cannot emphasize how much fun this site is. Even if you don’t get tagged visit. For a writer it is golden. They have the popular tunes listed for a great deal of time.
This is really a fun tag. I don’t think anyone will mind doing it. You don’t have to get wordy like I did. You can just jot down the songs that impacted you without all the verbosity I spewed.
And the five people I tag are Angeleyes, Hijackqueen, King’s Wife, Domestic Goddess, and Giddy Tiger. I don’t pick on the moms enough around here. I am tempted to tag Zara’s Mom too but since she has a widdle widdle baby I will give her break this time.

oooh, I wanna just try this, but not as a tag. curious as to what music played when I turned 18! actually… could still be played these days, LOL…
SA: I thought about tagging you May. But then I’m still happy you did Chapter 2 of 48 Concubines so I left you be. Some of the tunes from 76 can be played today. *wags finger at the whipper snapper*
Blue Ribbon musical hugs for you.

Don’t you think this is the best meme ever… putting aside the excuse to find out our age of course..
Lets shake shake to the songs till the night goes old…!!

Gosh, I love this meme…cos I’m a music person. I’ll hop over to the site in a bit to do it, SA!
Ta-ta!

SA: Well then you must go educate yourself on these tunes. Most essential for boogie-ing in the Maldives. Or are you so young I need to get a note from your parents to visit my blog?
kekekekekeke
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pm
i love all the old songs.
i can relate to them better than the present ones. *nostalgic* i was so young and innocent then. so unspoilt, so trusting. life changes people, time changes people. perhaps it’s all in the name of self preservation, self defense..
SA: Back then I believed music could change the world. Now my kids do. Just the circle of life. At 18 we are so much more trusting. I guess age creates lies and the desire to steal from others that are young and gullible.
March 23rd, 2007 at 1:00 am
Wow, this is a really fun meme! I remember that Queen “You’re my Best Friend”. Queen is ageless.
SA: I thought you would like this one.
Queen does move across generations. Remembers Wayne’s World. And You’re My Best Friend was a favorite of me and my High School best friend.
March 23rd, 2007 at 1:30 am
Tadaaa…!!! Just completed the tag. Was that fast or what?
SA: Wow! You were fast. Really enjoyable right?
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:22 am
OK, I only 5 of the songs you picked by their titles. Maybe I might know more if I heard them. *giggle*
Sounds like you had lotsa fun doing this tag, ya?
SA: Oi! You giggled!!! Go listen to some of these tunes. Your head won’t stop bopping.
I may have had too much fun!
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:24 am
Oooh… I only know 5 of the songs you’ve written about. Guess I need to hie me over to the website and check it out.
SA: Faster faster go. And enjoy. Use the time to forget about work.
March 23rd, 2007 at 3:26 am
Ooops! A computer glitch has made me spam you, SA! *presses delete button repeatedly*
SA: Chinese girls and spam. Simply delicious! *slurps*
March 23rd, 2007 at 4:37 am
Is it good or bad to say I don’t know any of the songs that you mentioned? Like Eve, I’m too young!!!! hahaha….
SA: It is good that you are now aware of them. Bad if you don’t do anything about hearing them at least once. Perhaps I need a permission slip from your father to visit me blog too.
March 23rd, 2007 at 10:54 am
hahaha! I am surprised that I know some of the songs, too…!!
same here, was sucking my thumb at that year…
SA: I am glad you know some of these songs laymank. So you were here in 76? Now that surprises me. I thought you were much younger.
March 23rd, 2007 at 11:43 am
Gootness! I can actually hear Nazareth’s Love Hurts in my head!!
♪♫Play that funky music white boy
Play that funky music right
Play that funky music white boy
Lay down that boogie and play that funky music till you die…♪♫
*boogies with SA..*
SA: I loved Nazareth. Even caught them in concert opening for Rush in 1983 in Heidelberg, West Germany. That was my theme personal song, Love Hurts. Though it would have been more accurate if it had been titled Love is Nonexistent. keke How do you know this song? You must have been real young.
*boogies with Kat*
March 23rd, 2007 at 8:59 pm
it’s like going down memory lane, dancing with SA all the way. Looks like we are from the same passage of time, hehe!

Haha, nothing wrong with being in the company of esteemed moms!! Next time, next time..

Goodness! I don’t know the songs except for Mama Mia.
SA: Mama Mia!!! Go find some of those others. Quickly my man.
March 24th, 2007 at 9:44 am
Music is great. It always helps bring memories back in crystal form when a song plays from a certain time period in your life.
SA: How are you Alisa? Been busy I suspect.
Music really does that to my memory. Kiss always takes me back to that dinky PX in Fort Leonard Wood. The Bohemian Rhapsody reminds me of running the streets of Houston being a little goof. haha Alright. A big goof!
March 24th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
ooohh donna summers, she’s amazing!

*boogies to the music*
March 25th, 2007 at 8:58 am
Music unites a generation together. I figured that people from a particular generation share some common memories, one of those is music popular in their times.
I’m sorry that I don’t know most of the songs that you have cited. I may have heard them but couldn’t put the music to its title.
SA: The music does bind my friends and me. One of the things we reminesce upon is the music we enjoyed and still can fortunately. Though when we bought them back then it was on vinyl or tape. Now it is all digital.
Its okay PY. Most young ladies in your generation are not familiar with these tunes. Moldy oldies. hehe Like me.
March 25th, 2007 at 10:14 am
hi simple american,

SA: Hope your presentation goes well. And do enjoy your trip to the states.:)
March 25th, 2007 at 10:17 am

SA: Glad you liked them. Perhaps you can start the 16 YO old tag.
March 25th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

SA: I am sorry bkworm. *blush*

Simple American, I went to check the link to view the hits in the year 1997 when I was 18 years old, but none of the titles ring quite a bell to me…maybe except Barbie Girl but I didn’t quite like that song.
Gosh….I think I was listening to Mandarin pops. I think you may like Mandarin pops songs if you know Mandarin well. Some of those songs have beautiful and insightful lyrics.
SA: I don’t think anyone really liked Barbie Girl. Sad that one is listed. Just an example of the poor taste out there.
I will look Mandarin pops up PY. I remember learning some poetry when I was in Madarin class and the language can be so beautiful, even when you are ignorant of the meaning.
March 26th, 2007 at 9:20 am
hantu = u know wat = kwai
Kkkk… I know u know wan
SA: *blink blink* You did not see me blink. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
March 26th, 2007 at 9:56 am
i grew up listening to and loving the 70’s music!!
SA: It makes me feel young when I hear those tunes. Until I try to dance to it. haha
March 26th, 2007 at 10:40 am
i prefer moldy music. *hold hands with moldy you* haha.
SA: And hears a moldy hug for you.
March 27th, 2007 at 3:44 am
Luckily you didn’t tag me.. b’cos I only started listening to English pop songs in the late 80s and stopped all together now.. (haih.. where to find time?).
But.. who doesn’t know If You Leave Me Now..
SA: Its hard to keep up with music. Seems like only kids have time to really get into all of it where they can recognize the artists and songs. I just hear stuff nowadays and hum it. Sing the words wrong, much to my daughter’s displeasure. wakakaka
