I Went Back
On Tuesday my son had Boy Scouts. I went to pick him up after work and the time was around eight o’clock. Being hungry and knowing his meeting should run thirty more minutes, I decided to go to the Malay Bistro again. On the way there I passed another restaurant, called K. L. Malaysian Restaurant. It is newly opened and I recall a Vietnamese restaurant previously at that location. That must be the establishment SIL#4 told me about though we missed it last Thursday.
Nevertheless I went on to Malay Bistro. I ordered nasi lemak and roti canai to go. The Chinese lady that took my order does not know her menu. I asked for these items quite clearly and I know how to say them from the other Malay restaurant I have visited. I had to tell her the numbers from off the menu. Kind of pathetic, as I think, waitstaff should memorize their menus. Pathetic.
There were three tables of diners at eight o’clock on a Tuesday. Glad they have business as I want them to be successful. I listened to the diners there and I heard English (American accent) and Cantonese being spoken. All of the wait staff speaks Cantonese I noticed.
A man I suspect is the owner brought out my order. I asked him if he is from Malaysia and he perked up. He said in good English that he comes from Kuala Lumpur. He asked if I have been there. Once I said I had not he seemed a little less enthused. Oh well. I got my food and drove to the Scout House to eat.

I ate the roti canai first. Forgot to take a picture. Dang it. It had a yellow colored sauce with touches of red in it. I dipped my roti canai in there and devoured it. Now this has to be some good stuff. I swear it opened up every pore in my head. My tongue was on fire. My eyes teared. My ears cleared. The taste was wonderful. I may go back Friday and just order roti canai.
I took a bite of my rice before I remembered that I need to take a photo. The nasi lamak was quite nice. Usually, I do not eat white rice but this tasted different, then rice my wife buys. This rice is a little drier smaller grain, and I liked it. The chicken tasted lovely too. Has to use curry in the flavoring but not so saturated that it changed the color as when my missus makes a chicken curry.
Extra treats with this dish was a hard boiled egg, some dried fish, green beans, and cucumber. The cucumbers were a mouth saver, when spiciness escalated. Nice dish that I would order again. Next time I go, I intend to try the assam laksa.
While at the Scout House I saw this one dad I prefer to avoid. A regular long nose busy body. I am eating my food and he walks over to shake my hand. *long series of expletives deleted* So I have to stop eating. Truly, I am pathetic. I had no hand sanitizer and I refuse to eat without clean hands. I don’t like him so I am not going to trust his hands. I’m strange that way.
The meeting broke up at this time, so I rushed my son so I can go home and finish eating. Once there my missus stole half of my egg. She acts like she is the mother of my children or something. LOL!

i wonder what will happen if u happen to come to Malaysia…
SA: Food costs will go up, because of the difficulty to keep up with my demand. LOL! And I will hug you!

You should come to Malaysia since you like nasi lemak and roti canai. Try the teh tarik too. Wow you are making me hungry, now where is my supper?
SA: You know I never asked about teh tarik. Must look next time.

It’s one of the many favourite Malaysian foods of my hubby. He must get it every Thursday at the night market or he would grumble abt my plain cooking.
SA: I wish they had a night market here. We went to night market in Vancouver last year. So much food to choose from. Your hubby has good taste in food too.

ah don’t talk about the pasar malams (night market). i miss them. and all this talk about roti canai and nasi lemak is making me hungry. i tried to make roti canai once, but i couldn’t get the bread nice and soft and fluffy - i must try it again..
SA: If you figure it out please share. I would love to try and bake some.

That nasi lemak looks way awesome. Looks almost exactly like the one I had last week at a mamak restaurant here.
So two Malaysian restaurant in town now?
SA: Three. We’re getting up there.

can u believe an american is making a malaysian salivate? dang!
WE SERIOUSLY NEED A GOOD MALAYSIAN RESTAURANT IN ADELAIDE. period!
the sauce u dip in for roti canai is curry.
SA: Ah ha! That explains the yellow color. Man that is some good stuff!
August 23rd, 2007 at 8:21 pm
We don’t usually use long grained rice in cooking and there is coconut milk mixed into the nasi lemak (hence the name - fatty rice). And you probably had the roti canai with dhal (yellow) and sambal (red) The Nasi looks good though. Next time tell the restaurant owner to make you a teh tarik (even if its not on the menu) and tell him you have Malaysian friends - it might perk him back up
SA: I tried telling him I had Malaysian friends and it did not phase him. Maybe he thought I was trying to get a discount.

I had roti pisang yesterday! It’s like roti canai, except it’s made with slices of banana in it and drizzled with honey!
I’m like you too…sometimes I just have to wash my hands after shaking hands with someone I don’t like or don’t trust.
Call it paranoia.
SA: I want roti pisang. I love bananas and honey.
I think it annoyed me more because I just find this guy is a pest always trying to get his nose into my business. I’m really goofy about germs. Why I cannot watch other people cook. I drive my wife nuts, because everytime I turn around I’m washing my hands. And you’ll rarely find me without hand sanitizer in my pocket.

oh boy! you mentioned the magic word!!! Teh Tarik!!!
Now I am home sick!!
please don’t have the teh tarik within this coming month…
SA: They have teh tarik on the menu. May order one this weekend. You are so close to me now. Long weekend come on over. When will you be this close again?

So surprising that an american who never been to Malaysia like Malaysian food so much! You really haven’t been to Malaysia?
SA: Nope. Only been to Korea and Japan in Asia. I will go there someday.
August 24th, 2007 at 7:31 am

We have some great Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai stalls in Singapore. You should try our Hainanese Chicken rice, Laksa, Prawn Noodles…. etc. Your weight would increased so much after all that eating, airlines might not want to take you! kekeke….
Alternatively, when I go to US, I’ll bring the ingredients and cook for you. That should be sooner than you coming to Singapore.
SA: I hope I prove you wrong and show up in Singapore. But you are welcome to come visit me whenever you like. No need to bring any pans, as the missus has everything needed for Asian cooking. If something is missing, we can go to Chinatown to find it. I’ve seen the results of your cooking and cannot wait to taste them as well.
August 25th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
roti canai! nasi lemak! man, you’re having a few of the best Malaysian food all in one go!
August 26th, 2007 at 5:11 am
you need one month in malaysia. hahahaa. that includes singapore of cos.
you should seriously come down. the exchange rate is favorable for you. wink!
SA: Of course I have to visit both. I have looked and Malaysia will let me live there three years. In all of that time I may not see and eat all that I need to. haha
August 27th, 2007 at 1:21 am
I just had to comment
It’s interesting to find an angmoh who likes spicy Malaysian food like you do
Should come to Malaysian even if only to eat
SA: Hi Jewelle and welcome to my blog. I have to go Malaysia so I can taste all of those treats. But I wanna meet the nice people I have discovered through blogging too.
August 27th, 2007 at 3:24 am
When you do come to Malaysia, just bring your stomach along. It has everything you need here…my pitch sounds like the travel brochure my son had to do for his IT assignment, haha
SA: I better bring some clothes too. People point, look, and giggle when I don’t.
Sounds like your son did a good job. I will be so happy the day I step off the plane onto SE Asia terra firma.

Nasi lemak - tick.
Roti canai - tick.
What next on your list of Malaysian foods to eat?
SA: Asam laksa, roti canai, and teh tarik.
Ate those last night.

Both are Zara’s favourite! (and so is mine)
She likes her roti with sugar (another way of eating eat if you don’t already know), and her nasi with little fish and hard boil egg white..
Come to Malaysia, I can buy you this every day.. they are very cheap in Malaysia. 15cents for the roti and 40cents for the nasi. Hee hee.
SA: Trying to win this lotto so I can get over there soon. Can you believe it is 9 figures US up for grabs?
Those little fish and the egg really are nice with the nasi.
August 30th, 2007 at 8:14 am
sounds yummy. i don’t know how big texas is, but is it just a handful of malaysian or chinese restaurants. i think i have a guy friend in texas, last i talked to him was last year, and he is ‘moonlighting’ around.
psst, melb’s version of nasi lemak, take away

SA: The Malaysian restaurants are really making a show now. Went from one to three and I have heard rumor of a fourth. We have all kinds of Chinese restaurants here for all tastes. The Chinese population in Houston is quite large. Things have changed since I was a boy. There were only two Chinese kids in my Junior and Senior High School, a brother and sister. I must admit I like more Chinese in Texas. The food is so much better now.
